The MCR-040/140 to be your friendly music partner.

The Yamaha MCR-040/140: A Lifelong Music Partner

Cool looking, great sounding

The perfect system for every music lover
We want Yamaha MCR-140WH Micro Component System to be your friendly music partner. Always close at hand. Easy to use, nice to touch, fun to look at, great to listen to. The more you live with it, the more you'll like it. You and your MCR-040/140 are going to be friends for a long time. The cool, colorful appearance is just the start of many things to like about the MCR-040/140. Compact and convenient, it lets you enjoy a variety of music sources, including iPod. And because it features Yamaha digital amp and YST technologies, the sound is much better than you would normally expect from a micro system.

Enjoy All Your Favorite Music
The MCR-040 puts your favorite music sources within easy reach. It's got a CD player, an FM radio, USB and mini jack inputs for portable audio devices, and a dock on top for an iPod, which you can control with the handy card-sized remote control. The iPod and USB device charge both while in use and in standby mode. What's more, it has both a clock timer and a sleep timer.

Perfectly Matched Amp and Speakers
Both the amp and speakers are designed for high efficiency and performance, so the sound is bigger and better than you expect from components of this size. They were also planned and carefully tested for best audio integration.

Advanced YST Technology Delivers Big Bass Sound
Advanced Yamaha Active Servo Technology (YST) is a major reason for the high performance of Yamaha speakers, and is especially suited for small speakers. The CD receiver and speakers work together, using negative impedance drive to produce small low-frequency signals, which are enhanced to large outputs by precisely designed speaker cabinet and port. The result is powerful, accurate bass that seems to be coming from a much larger speaker.

VCCS Technology
Vibration Control Cabinet Structure(VCCS) solves the problem of speaker cabinet vibration with strategically placed pieces of wood whose shapes, positions and angles were arrived at after a long process of experimentation. It also uses special foam rubber that provides excellent vibration isolation performance.

Bose - Better Sound Through Research

Dedication to research and excellence. It's been the Bose approach to better sound since Dr. Amar G. Bose founded the company in 1964. But the commitment actually began years earlier.

In the late 1950s, Dr. Bose, then a graduate student, purchased a stereo system based on its impressive technical specifications. The avid music enthusiast was disappointed to discover the speakers didn't reproduce the sound of a live performance--and he became determined to recreate that lifelike audio experience for listeners.

After extensive research, Dr. Bose and colleagues introduced the groundbreaking 901 Direct/Reflecting speakers in 1968. Their lifelike sound won immediate and widespread acclaim.

Since those early days of 901 speakers, Bose engineers have kept their focus on creating better technology. You'll find that focus exemplified in the CineMate GS Series II home theater speaker system, with advances that ensure premium performance and convenience.

The CineMate GS Series II delivers a level of realism that can't be matched by TV speakers alone

Powerful Audio Performance, Low Visual Impact

The Simplest Way to Add Bose Home Theater Performance to Your HDTV

The Bose CineMate GS Series II speaker system lets you enjoy Bose 2.1-channel home theater performance and bring out the full audio potential of your HDTV. Proprietary TrueSpace technology enables premium Gemstone speakers and an Acoustimass module to deliver improved digital acoustic performance for movies, games, sports and more. The system easily connects directly to your TV, avoiding the need to disconnect other sources. And with no rear speakers, there's no wiring to the back of your room. A programmable universal remote control simplifies operation of other connected sources.

If you're looking for a home theater upgrade to complement your HDTV, the CineMate GS Series II system delivers--with sound and style. Two powerful Gemstone speakers flank your TV and put you in the middle of dramatic home theater sound. You'll experience a level of realism that simply cannot be matched by TV speakers alone. A hideaway Acoustimass module provides the low frequency effects that make movies and games so compelling. It even includes dedicated bass control. Place the module in a corner or out of view--all the sound seems to come from the compact speakers. Together, the speakers and Acoustimass module provide full depth and clarity for your music, too.

Digital 5.1 decoding provides improved realism from 5.1-encoded DVDs, DBS or HDTV. Combine that with proprietary Videostage 5 decoding and post-processing circuitry, and you'll enjoy a high quality, multichannel surround sound experience from practically any source--such as DVDs, videocassettes and stereo CDs.

Setting up a CineMate GS Series II system is a quick exercise, with only a few wires to connect. With just four simple connections, the system hooks up directly to your TV, and there's minimal--if any--disruption to existing component connections. Intuitive one-way connectors eliminate the guesswork often associated with more complex systems. A small interface module houses your audio input from the TV and displays on/off status for your system. And it's all controlled with a programmable universal remote that works seamlessly with most video components attached to your television.

An ideal enhancement to your existing video components, the CineMate GS Series II system is a perfect setup for small- to medium-sized rooms.

Acoustimass Module

The Acoustimass module for the CineMate Series II speaker system works in concert with the small speakers to deliver the full range of sound. The patented Bose design produces low frequencies for all channels with no audible distortion. When the module is tucked behind a curtain or chair, all of the sound seems to come directly from the two arrays.

Apple MacBook MB467LL/A 13.3-Inch Laptop

Apple MacBook 13.3-Inch Laptop

This review is from: Apple MacBook MB467LL/A 13.3-Inch Laptop (Personal Computers)
I upgraded to a new Vista laptop last year, and have been unhappy and frustrated with it from the start. When my daughter's laptop died a horrible death, I really didn't want to go through the same Vista pains with her, so I decided to replace it with a Mac (it's going to be a Christmas present, so shhh!). As designated tech support for my family and friends, I started learning everything I could about Mac before she started asking questions. The more I learned about it, the more I wanted one for myself, and now that I have one, I am really kicking myself for not switching last year.

It's simply beautiful. I know it sounds like I drank the apple-flavored Kool-Aid, but the Macbook really is a marvel of elegant form and function. It feels solid and substantial, without being bulky and heavy. the aluminum design is a work of art, and I really appreciate all of the eco-friendly choices that were made regarding the components.

The LED screen is brighter and clearer than my old laptop's LCD screen. Looking at them side by side, the difference is amazing (and my old laptop was marketed as a portable entertainment PC, with an upgraded screen). I don't know what kind of LCD screens some of the other users have, but the Macbook screen is far superior to any notebook screen I've ever seen.

The back-lit keyboard is great - no more keyboard light needed. The keys have a solid feel to them, they're not mushy or noisy like some keyboards can be, they're just right, and the key layout is just like a full-size keyboard - no more hunting to figure out where the heck the backslash key is hidden or hitting the wrong key because your pinky slipped off of an undersized shift key.

I'll admit that I couldn't figure out the trackpad at first, but I felt like a dork once I realized how simple it is. I did change the settings so that I can tap to click in addition to pressing down on the trackpad (since that's what I'm used to). It's just incredibly easy once you get going. Swipe two fingers down the pad to scroll, swipe four for expose, tap with two fingers for secondary-click... it does more straight out of the box than my old highly-programed touch-pad. And after about an hour, the gestures become second-nature.

As far as the built-in speakers go, they're nicer than I expected, especially since I can't figure out how the heck they fit any speakers into such a tiny case. Seriously, it's like the whole case is the speaker. As I type this review, I'm listening to the album Paradise Lost by Symphony X and It sounds pretty good to me. of course, it sounds even better played through my Klipsch Room Groove, but um.. hey... they're integrated laptop speakers - though they are very nice ones.

There are only two USB ports, but since the keyboard and trackpad are so functional, you won't need external input devices (though a number pad is a must for me when doing a lot of data-entry). I only use USB for external storage and synching my iPod, so it's not a problem for me (my iPod touch has a program that lets it act like a number pad when I need one). If I ever need more devices at once, I'll get a USB hub.

Now, it's confession time: As a Windows-centric IT Professional, I never liked Apple much, and I spent many years making fun of Mac and Mac users. When OS X came out, I couldn't justify further ridicule, so I just ignored Mac whenever the subject came up. After using Leopard for a short time, I can tell you that I don't have the appetite to eat the big heaping serving of humble pie that I'm owed. Leopard is slick and smooth and oh so fast. I'm truly enamored with iLife and iWork, and Time Machine is just about perfect (better than shadow copies, for the Windows guys and gals). It's packed with a lot of little things (like Spotlight and Preview) that are unobtrusive and helpful, which is a vast improvement over Vista's annoying and unhelpful features.

So, now I'm a happy convert. I still have two programs that are Windows-only (until I find replacements), and I still go back to my old (1 year old) laptop occasionally (for just the two, I don't want to bother with Boot Camp or Parallels). I hate going back to Vista after using my Macbook. Even though that laptop technically has higher RAM and processor specs than the Macbook, it's slow and clunky in comparison. I always sigh in relief when I can put it away again.

Bottom line: I love my Macbook and I wish I hadn't waited so long to make the switch. If you're worried about switching to Mac, visit an Apple Store - even if you have to make a day trip to get there, it will be worth it. Spend a little hands on time with the Macbook, and check out all the free classes the store offers. If you buy from the store, they will move your files from your old PC for you (for free). If all of that doesn't convince you, then come see me, and I'll offer you a tall, refreshing glass of Apple-flavored Kool-Aid. :-) Julia (Walton, KY USA).

This review is from: Apple MacBook MB466LL/A 13.3-Inch Laptop (OLD VERSION) (Personal Computers)
Pros: - GREAT OS
- Lightning fast
- Light-weight, sturdy unibody design
- Attractive design
- Dashboard
- Incredible screen
- Great trackpad
- Good battery life
- Keyboard is excellent
- Magsafe adapter
- Excellent iSight Camera
- Boot camp available

Cons: - Glossy screen quite reflective
- Screen is fingerprint prone
- No FireWire
- Small amount of game functionality
- Battery not as good as advertised
- Distant longing for physical trackpad button
- Multi-touch gestures not entirely spot-on
Summary: The new Macbook. It's incredible. With faults. That's all I'm going to say for my introduction. Read on.

Physical Specs

The product physically is very sturdy, thanks to the unibody construction. Normally the chassis would normally consist of various small parts. So instead of taking a small piece of aluminum and adding more aluminum, Apple has taking a big piece of aluminum and subtracted from it. Thus creating a sturdy, yet light laptop. I have heard that the aluminum interferes with internet connectivity issues. I do have to say, unfortunately, it is true. I put the Macbook and my old PC laptop side by side, and the PC was able to pick up better frequency and more networks.

Now for the multi-touch trackpad. It is made from glass, but it feels like there is a covering on it that doesn't nearly have the friction of glass. Clicking and moving the cursor is very easy and enjoyable, with the very large surface. Right-clicking can be done with by clicking with two fingers or by clicking one of the bottom corners after being manually set. It should also be noted that only the bottom 3/4 of the trackpad is clickable.

The multi-touch gestures are fun to use, but are truly unneeded gimmicks that could be done easier with a click.
I'll just go through the gestures now.

There are 2 finger gestures:
The first is scrolling with using two fingers by swiping your fingers vertically or horizontally depending on the page.
Secondly you can rotate a picture using two fingers apart and rotating.
The third gesture is holding the control button and scrolling vertically to zoom in on a page.

And there is one 3-finger gesture:
Swipe with three fingers to navigate. You can do this to go forward or back on a page, or changing a picture.

Lastly there are 4-finger gestures:
Swiping vertically upwards allows you to clear everything off your desktop.
Swiping vertically down launches Expose.
Swiping horizontally in any direction lets you change and view your running applications, which can also be done with command+tab.

On the bottom of the MacBook there is a panel that allows for easy access to your battery and hard drive. This will be handy to many people.

The keyboard is just like the Air, with the spaces between the keys. This creates a very nice typing experience, and are backlit if you purchase the 2.4GHz model.

A major letdown by Apple is the omission of a FireWire port. This is very disappointing to many people, but doesn't affect me at all. Nowadays the average users don't use FireWire too much. Although I do see this as a major problem for professional applications.

There is also a battery life indicator on the side of the base that glows green to show the rounded percentage of your battery.

Software and Performance
Of course the MacBook has the great Mac OS X Leopard software.
It is very fast, and has good security.

The battery life is advertised to have 5 hours of battery life, but Apple obviously means not being connected to the Internet, and having no applications running. You'll probably get about 4 and a half hours with Safari and other apps running. Unless you have a lot of apps on like me, then you'll maybe have 3 and a half to 4 hours.

With the NVidia graphics card, the screen looks pretty good, as do games. I do have to admit, though, the new MacBook Pro screen looks better, especially with blacks. Still, games really pop on the gorgeous glossy screen, unless you are in a bright area. The glossy screen of course attracts bad glares and many noticeable fingerprints. Still, if you are indoors or someplace with low light, the glossy screen is perfect. I mostly use it inside, so I wouldn't trade the beautiful glossy screen. Although for those coffee-shop typing folks, this could be a deal-breaker.

Other than these things, Mac OS X is the same, really.

Conclusion

If you have purchased a MacBook anytime soon, then I would not suggest you purchase this one. Most of the differences are the physical attributes, and the software is pretty much the same.

If you are new to Macs like me, then I would DEFINITELY suggest this phenomenal notebook computer. Of course it does have it's faults, truly I have never used such a simple, enjoyable computer.

The quality of the sound is really very good
Powerful sound and they can handle a lot of volume. They sound better if played loud. Great for parties and for really knocking down the walls. They work with any amp/receiver, but a very strong amp will bring out their best. While a weaker amp will display more of their shortcomings. If you are looking for an inexpensive and "decent" set of speakers, these will work great. However, they are enormous for bookshelf speakers. If you have a critical ear, and are used to speakers costing more then $400 a pair, then these probably won't pass your test.  a 25 watt amp and they sound great! the bass is crisp and has a noticeable presence, the highs sound clear and compliment the bass and the mids tie it all together quite well. Do not Reach the "super highs" or the "super lows" but great L/R speakers. A relatively affordable stereo system in my bedroom, not a particularly large space, and when set apart from each other by several feet I can enjoy the best sound possible from these speakers.

Pro: Less expensive Speakers that sound and look great. May buy more for future 5.1. I like the Larger size. Far Better than listening through a ihome or your tv speakers.

Con: Rear Facing Port, not a big deal just not in the front. Much better than listening through a ihome or your tv speakers. You can get better sound from other speakers, but you'll pay more for that luxury. These suit my needs very well; One thing to note that some have mentioned before--these are 20 inches tall; they really don't look like bookshelf speakers to me! I suppose they would fit in a large wall unit or on a shelf but they can just as well stand on the floor.

Atlantic Technology's Groundbreaking Design

The Atlantic Technology System 4400 represents the culmination of our efforts to develop the world’s finest moderately-priced home theater speaker system. The System 4400 builds on much of the exhaustive research and technology incorporated in our groundbreaking, state-of-the-art systems, the highly acclaimed System 8200e and System 6200e. As a result, the 4400 delivers superb sound with all movie and music formats. Getting a home theater system to sound "just right" is no easy task. As voices or effects move across the room, the handoff from speaker to speaker should not be perceived as a series of singular events, but instead, as a continuous smooth transition. In developing System 4400, we have taken extraordinary care in this process. The key to the 4400’s outstanding performance is that all of the system’s individual loudspeakers have been optimized specifically for their intended use. Although customizing the speakers is more costly for us—it requires three very different acoustic designs, expensive tooling, and task-specific cabinets—the sonic payoff is tremendous. We sincerely believe that within its price range—or even well above—it is one of the finest speaker systems available. Once you see and hear it for yourself, we are confident you will agree.

Atlantic Technology 4400C Speaker Offers an Impressive Level of Refinement and Flexibility

The 4400C Center Channel Speaker Provides Optimum Acoustic Control

For accurate reproduction of a multi-channel soundtrack, the three front-channel speakers must have the same sonic signature, which is why Atlantic engineers designed the 4400C center channel speaker with the exact same driver complement as the matching 4400LR speakers. They are both designed for use with a dedicated subwoofer, and the 4400C includes the same unique acoustic controls as the 4400LR. Other than the 4400C being designed to work horizontally, it is functionally identical to the 4400LR. The 4400C is also magnetically shielded and can be placed directly adjacent to your CRT tube-based TV set with no adverse effects on the television's picture. Additionally, the 4400C can be tilted on its dedicated base to provide optimum sonic coverage over the listening area.

The Best Atlantic Has to Offer

Creates natural, uncolored sound
At the movies or a live concert, everyone wants the best seat in the house. It’s the same way in your living room— you want the best possible sound, no matter where the speakers are placed and regardless of the room’s acoustics. All three front channels of the 4400 address this problem. Each speaker comes with two controls that help customize the speaker to your individual room.
  • High Frequency Switch - The speakers have a three-position tweeter level switch to compensate for overly reflective or excessively damped room acoustics, so the speakers’ sound is never too dull or too "bright."
  • Boundary Compensation - Placing a center channel speaker directly on a large-screen TV, or installing a left/ right speaker in a bookshelf unit can cause a major buildup of lower midrange energy from what speaker engineers call "boundary effects." The result: voices and instruments can sound unnaturally thick and heavy. We developed a circuit that counteracts this problem. Activating the boundary compensation switch will return the lower midrange to its natural, uncolored state.
The 4400C comes with a unique tilting base so the speaker can be aimed at the listener’s ears. The audible benefit of this design is precise intelligibility of voices, dialogue, and on-screen effects.

THX Certified

THX is a series of standards and technologies originally developed by Lucas Film Ltd. (of Star Wars fame) and now an entity unto itself. These technologies and standards are intended to ensure that what you hear and see on your A/V system, as closely as possible, matches what the director/artist/engineer heard and saw during the final mixing of the source material. THX standards are intended to enhance every type of viewing and listening experience including the latest discrete multi-channel digital formats.

Unlike a lot of CEs, Onkyo may have indavertantly cannibalized its own model lineup by pushing so much featureset into an entry level receiver that it might deter buyers from their higher end models. I recently did a thorough comparison of the Pioneer VSX-1020 and Denon AVR-791 and the Onkyo nudged out the Pioneer due to its beefier amp section and OSD capabilities. That said, I must caution users that its value is marred by what appears to be a bug with its ability to pass through HDMI video signals unmolested, even in "Through" modes. This bug manifests itself in two ways: 1. 24 bit sources (like cable hdtv) are upconverted to 30 bit when output on a display; AND 2. for some inexplicable reason, 1080p 24fps sources stutter intermittently as if a frame is dropped. The latter might be more noticeable to plasma owners whereas 120hz and 240hz LCDs might compensate for the frame stuttering with their interpolation software (ie the soap opera effect).

With that caveat, the Onkyo is a terrific performer offering strong power (power consumption is up from the 607 to a very grown up 756 watts), terrific flexibility (four speaker terminals can be assigned to wide, height or zone 2). The Denon is limited to merely 7 speaker terminals and the Pioneer has only a pair of assignable terminals. The Audyssey auto-callibration (2EQ) is a notch behind Denon, but the inclusion of Audyssey DSX (for wide arrangements) is a feature that the Denon does not offer. While it lacks the USB terminal for Ipod playback of the Pioneer and the Denon, it does offer a computer input which might resolve the HDMI handshake nightmare many face with htpcs.

Onkyo rather smartly included a fan atop of the receiver, which is silent and all but eliminates the historical Onkyo toaster oven effect.

I really enjoy this receiver, but found the HDMI video molestation issues to quite problematic and what mar an otherwise incredible buy. Hopefully Onkyo can issue a firmware update.

As others have said, the two 1 star reviews do not review this new Onkyo 608 (makes no sense to me).

Anyway, I absolutely love my new OnkyoTX-SR608 . I never review stuff, but I wanted to give props to this receiver. I was debating between this one and the new Pioneer 1020. However, I've heard that the amps in the Pioneers don't compare to the amps in the Onkyos TX-SR608 . Though I cannot verify the truth of this, I do believe that the amp in the Onkyo is of a very high quality. I have already noticed a tremendous amount of power increase over my previous Yamaha receiver (the model that was included with the Yamaha 390 HTIB). This puts out a lot more sound, and I absolutely love the ability to take advantage of HD audio. I noticed a huge fidelity difference in the compressed Dolby Digital track for Dark Knight and the Dolby True HD. The track was intended to include a lot of bass, and the HD includes all of it. The regular Dolby did not compare. Thus, HD audio TX-SR608 is definitely worth having if you own a blu-ray player. Just like video quality (some transfers are better than others; aka reference quality), not all sound tracks will have a huge difference, but to me, it's still worth it. Back to the Onkyo: I love it. There are so many settings that you can tweak. If you like the ability to configure your equipment, you will love this receiver! You can also bi-amp with this receiver, which is nice if you don't have 7 speakers.

First and foremost, people that don't even own the "TX-SR608" shouldn't even be posting here. Trying to compare the "TX-SR608" that has a built in fan and the "606" that doesn't AND has the fact the "TX-SR608" has 2x the amount of features is like apple and oranges. Enough said about that and onto a review by a person that actually owns the "TX-SR608".... Pushes my polk audio speakers very very well (2 @ 70 monitors, 4 @ 50 monitors, 1 @ cs2 center, and powered psw505). Volume hardly goes past 1/2 way / 50,,, anymore and the neighbors start calling cops im sure.. Loads of options and can be tweeked untill you are blue in the face. Got sub set @ 80hz, front main 70's set @ 60hz, all 4 surround 50 speakers set @ 80hx THX, and cs2 center set @ 80hz THX. One really really nice thing about the onkyo TX-SR608 is how cool it is and stays @ room temp with the built in fan. I'm loving this receiver so far and would highly advise anyone to purchase without a 2nd thought. More receiver than I need with no need for seperate amp.
